  The Grumman F9F Panther had been the manufacturer's very first jet fighter therefore the United States Navy's second. It first flew in 1947. Power had been a Rolls-Royce Nene turbojet built under permit by Pratt & Whitney as the J42. Since there clearly was insufficient area in the wings and fuselage for gas for the thirsty jet, permanently installed wingtip fuel tanks were added.
