The S-58, constructed on Sikorskys effort, was initially ignored by armed forces commanders. But they very soon became aware of the outstanding potential with this machine which, in H-34 variation, would see solution with armies in 25 different nations! The final medium helicopter to use a piston motor before the development of the turbine, the H-34 received its baptism of fire in Algeria. In Vietnam the U.S. Army preferred the H-21, but the H-34 was used extensively by the Marines.
