In 1940, after World War II had broken out, the US basic staff bought various factories to create a light multi-purpose automobile with all-wheel drive. The American Bantam Company, Willys Overland, and Ford Motor Co. competed with one another. Willys model had been chosen, which, after an initial run of 1500 cars, went into mass manufacturing at the beginning of 1941 and reached a total production of 640.000 units from which 277.000 pieces were created by Ford under a licensing contract.
