In 1943 the German high command ordered development of a brand new light tank destroyer to replace vehicles such as the StuG III and Marder. Prototypes of this Hetzer, which shared numerous the different parts of the Panzerkampfwagen 38(t), had been ready by 1944 and mass production began in April of the same year, with 2,584 cars produced by May, 1945. Manned by a crew of 4, it showcased a 75mm Pak 39 L/48 weapon in fixed mounting, and sloped armor covering the entire hull. The Hetzer was constantly modified during manufacturing, which makes up the many differences between very early, mid and later production models. The Hetzer ended up being Germany primary tank destroyer in latter period of the war, making an important contribution on both the Eastern and Western fronts.
Tamiya has never modeled this car before, in any scale or show, therefore we have selected to discharge it in our 1/48 MMV scale series, that is gaining interest due to the moderate prices and high collectability.
