Going the length
The A6M3/3a Zero fighter (Model 22) was designed to correct a number of the shortcomings of its A6M3 (Model 32) predecessor, which included paid off journey range. This entailed the Model 22 being provided standard-length 12m wings and receiving a bigger fuel tank, measures which were largely effective. A version had been additionally produced with longer machine weapon barrels. The Model 22 was assigned to journey groups from early 1943, and saw action within the hotly-contested Solomon Isles area.
