The Shenyang J-8II Finback-B, features a redesigned forward fuselage that utilize a set of lateral inlets and a solid nose to replace the initial nose inlet design regarding the J-8. The solid nose provides room enough to support a larger fire-control radar antenna for better target acquisition and tracking performance. The aircraft made its maiden trip on 12th June 1984, however it wasn't revealed on public until 1986. The batch manufacturing apparently started in 1988, plus the aircraft became operational in 1992.
