The F8F Bearcat was the very last of Grumman's piston-engine carrier-based fighters. Two XF8F-1 prototypes were purchased in November 1943, as well as the first of these had been flown on 21 August 1944. Grumman decided again to work well with many effective motor offered at the time, the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp -- the exact same motor which had powered both their Hellcat and Tigercat designs. Now, the engine ended up being fitted to the smallest, lightest airframe that might be built. This led to a highly maneuverable, fast airplane with an interest rate of climb 30percent more than the Hellcat.
