The S.M.79 was the absolute most successful Italian multi-role medium bomber of World War II. Developed from a civil airliner, the initial Sparvieros joined service with all the Regia Aeronautica in belated 1936, simply eventually to fly combat over Spain aided by the Aviacion Legionaria, the Italian contingent combat in support of the Nationalists. Its performance received favourable remarks from both edges, causing a succession of export purchases.An effective torpedo bomber aswell, the S.M.79 served the air forces of Brazil, Iraq, Yugoslavia, Romania and Spain, some right around the finish of this war. The Romanians travelled them on the Russian front from 1941 to 1944, an unprecedented record for an aircraft developed in the first 1930s.Though referred to as a tri-motor, several variations had been built as twin-engined aircraft using several different powerplants, including Junkers Jumo 211D 1,220 hp inlines. Regardless of the version, its management pleased many pilots and its ability to get home with considerable harm endeared it much more. Used throughout North Africa while the Mediterranean until the Italian surrender in September 1943, the Sparviero stayed flying with both Italian forces fighting alongside the Allies as well as the surviving pro-Nazi units.
